Kay Jones, one of our Board members, first met Florencia in 2005 at the dedication of the new Carolyn Belshe Orphanage in Cambine, Mozambique. She was 17 at that time and in 10th grade. In 2008 she applied for a scholarship under an education program that we created for kids at the orphanage. She became the first child to enter university. In 2013 she graduated with a degree in history. She was immediately offered a position as teacher in Secondary School, however, it was in the north of Mozambique. She did not hesitate to accept the position even though it took her far away from her home at the orphanage. As a result, we did not see her for 5 years.
During a Mozambique Orphanage Fund Mission Trip to the orphanage in September 2017, we were elated to see Florencia come walking up the driveway. At first, we didn’t know it was her. But, as she got closer and we saw who it was, we ran to her and gave her a big hug. She is doing well and is such a role model for the other girls still in the orphanage, that we took the opportunity to have her speak to them in a girl’s only meeting before returning to her home.
We are very proud of Florencia and all that she has accomplished. We give thanks to God for making it possible.
